YouTube affiliate link placement: assign jobs, then prove which surface wins
Operators often treat "where do I put the link" as a tip contest. The funnel map already answers that. This guide answers a different job: how you assign one job per surface, disclose on each surface that sells, and prove with your own hop which surface earned the tap - without inventing a winner from vibes.
Surface router (start here)
Assign first. Test second. Do not crown a surface from anecdotes.
Failed assumption: "description vs pin" is settled
The YouTube affiliate funnel already maps spoken CTA, description, pin, and labels. What it does not give you is an honest test between surfaces, or disclosure rules per surface when the endorsement lives in the video itself.
If that pipe is not built yet, read the funnel guide and come back. This article assumes a tracked destination exists and focuses on assignment conflicts and proof.
Checkpoint: you are here to assign and prove, not to re-learn the funnel map.
Prerequisites
- Public long-form watch page (logged-out or second device).
- Operator-owned click-truth hop you can label per surface. YouTube Studio is not a reliable outbound ledger for description-link clicks.
- A phone for the fold check.
- Your prior conversion rate on similar placements (for the sample-size guardrail below).
If you cannot pin or the description URL stays plain text, stop and read the not-clickable eligibility fork before any surface test.
Checkpoint: hop, phone, and a baseline CVR are ready.
Checkpoint A - Assign jobs (what only this guide owns)
Default split that matches operator reality:
- Description = permanent hub (disclosure, primary product, backlog resources).
- Pin = time-limited or rotating offers, or one engagement question. Never both commercial ask and engagement question in the same pin.
Sponsor conflict: if the pin slot is reserved for a brand CTA, the affiliate URL stays in the description and the spoken ask says "description." Do not squeeze a second commercial ask into the same pin.
Edit cost. On a backlog of hundreds of custom descriptions, rewriting every description is expensive. Operators sometimes choose the pin for a flash offer because it is cheaper to change - not because the pin always wins taps.
Pin fatigue (hypothesis). Operators report sponsor pins started to feel like noise. Treat "pin is highest visibility" as something to measure, not a law.
Held-for-review. Ordinary (non-pinned) comments with affiliate URLs can sit held for review or look deleted to the public while Studio still shows them to the owner. Confirm the public page before you treat a comment as a live placement.
Checkpoint: each surface has one job, and the pin is not contested.
Checkpoint B - Eligibility (hand off)
Pinned comments and clickable long-form description links need Advanced features (feature access; verification). Phone Intermediate is not enough. If eligibility still blocks you, use the not-clickable guide linked in Prerequisites.
Checkpoint: Advanced confirmed, or you stopped for eligibility.
Checkpoint C - Spoken surface (hub owns the script)
Name exactly one surface in the spoken ask - the funnel guide already scripts it ("description, right below the disclosure"). Do not say "links below."
Checkpoint: one named surface in the audio.
Checkpoint D - Disclosure per surface + phone fold
FTC staff guidance for influencers: if the endorsement is in a video, the disclosure should be in the video, not only in the uploaded description. Disclosures are likely to be missed when they appear only at the end or anywhere that requires tapping "more." Simple terms such as "ad" or "#ad" are fine when hard to miss; do not bury them in a hashtag cluster (FTC Disclosures 101). Ops hygiene, not legal advice.
Practical split:
- In-video: spoken and/or on-screen disclosure near the ask.
- Description / pin: conspicuous text disclosure above the first commercial URL on that surface (compliance checklist).
Phone fold (hypothesis to test, not a character gospel): open the public watch page on a real phone without tapping "Show more"; note whether disclosure + primary URL are visible; if not, shorten the opening, move the primary ask to a free pin slot, or make the spoken line name the surface that is actually visible; screenshot the collapsed state.
Checkpoint: disclosure exists in-video and above the first commercial URL on every text surface that sells.
Checkpoint E - Honest description vs pin test
This is the SERP gap the tip lists skip. Alternate surfaces across comparable videos (same niche, similar length, similar ask). Do not change the product, the spoken script shape, and the surface in the same week.
- Pick two matched videos (or two consecutive uploads in the same series).
- Video A: primary affiliate URL in the description only (pin free for engagement or empty of affiliate).
- Video B: primary affiliate URL in the pin only (description keeps disclosure + backlog, no competing primary ask).
- Label your own hop so desc and pin never share a click column.
- Compare outbound taps per 1,000 views from the hop - not Studio vanity, not vibes.
Sample-size guardrail (same math as the convert diagnosis; use your baseline only): expected sales is about outbound clicks times your prior conversion rate on that placement. Eight clicks at a 3% baseline expect about 0.24 sales - a zero is normal. Do not crown a winning surface until expected sales for that window are about 3 or more (roughly 100 outbound clicks at 3%). Under a simple independent-sales model, expected sales of 3 still leave about a 5% chance of a pure-chance zero. See the convert fork when taps exist but commissions stay flat for reasons downstream of placement.
Amazon Associates: keep one Tracking ID per video (Help caps accounts at 100 Tracking IDs) (multiple Tracking IDs). Put surface labels on your hop. Product Link Clicks counts direct product-link clicks only - not a full description-surface ledger (order report Help).
Checkpoint: you have a labeled A/B window and will not declare a winner before the expected-sales guardrail.
Shorts (hand off)
Classic Shorts description and comment URLs are non-clickable by current Help. Route viewers through a clickable surface using the not-clickable eligibility guide - do not rebuild that tree here.
Checkpoint: Shorts paths end on a clickable surface.
What to do this week
- Assign: description = permanent hub; pin = rotating ask or engagement.
- Disclose: in-video + above the first commercial URL on each text surface.
- Phone-check the fold once; screenshot the collapsed state.
- Run one matched desc-vs-pin window on your hop; no winner until expected sales ~3.
- If eligibility blocks the pin, stop at the not-clickable guide.
Funnel map: YouTube affiliate funnel: views are not commissions. Flat commissions after taps: diagnose the fork. Plain-text / cannot pin: eligibility fork.
Checkpoint: one assigned job, one disclosure plan, one labeled test window this week.
